How to Take Care of an Indian Ringneck

Indian Ringnecks are intelligent birds that make great pets. They are known for their ability to talk and have fascinating personalities that make them a delight to keep as pets. Indian Ringnecks have an excellent learning ability that enables them to pick up tricks very quickly; they enjoy mind stimulating activities and as such make excellent pets. Although Indian Ringnecks do not require constant attention they can be very affectionate companions if they are looked after properly. To properly take care of Indian Ringnecks there are several things that need to be monitored. Here is a compilation of a few vital things that you need to do to give your Indian Ringneck a happy and fulfilling life:

Diet

Indian Ringnecks are not picky eaters and they will enjoy eating most fruits and vegetables placed in their food bowl. There is nothing complicated about feeding your Ringneck, as long as they receive a combination of vegetables, pellets, seeds and fruits they can live a happy and long life. It cannot be stressed enough how dangerous it is to only provide seeds to your Ringneck, this can lead to health problems as seeds are full of carbohydrates and fat. This is not to say that you should not provide seeds for your Ringneck, in fact you should as Ringnecks eat seeds in the wild but it should be done in moderation. A pellet and seed diet works well with the addition of a range of fruits and vegetables. Apples are one of their favorite fruits; they also enjoy eating grapes, oranges, melons and really any other fresh fruit. Just ensure that they receive vegetables in their diet as well as they provide essential nutrients to Ringnecks.

Cage

Indian Ringnecks are excellent flyers and absolutely love to fly so the cage they are kept in must be big enough for them to fly around in. There really is no cage that is too big, so buy the biggest you can to keep your Indian Ringneck happy. Ensure that the cage has a variety of toys, Indian Ringnecks love to chew so chewable perches are a good choice to have in the cage. Ensuring that your Ringneck has a range of mind stimulating and entertaining toys in the cage is essential as it keeps them happy. The positioning of the cage is crucial, the best place for it to be placed is in a place where they can get regular human interaction and feel safe in their cage. Placing the cage in a corner or up against a wall is a good idea as it gives them a feeling of safety. Finally, ensure that the cage bars are made of stainless steel or coated with a non-toxic material as they love to chew on anything around them. Painted steel bars are a health hazard as swallowing paint is harmful for the health of your Ringneck so steer clear of cages that are not safely coated.

Temperament

Contrary to popular belief, Indian Ringnecks are not naturally feisty birds and can be relatively easy to tame if done properly. Indian Ringnecks are clever birds and need to constantly be engaged in mind stimulating activities to keep themselves happy so if they are not provided with anything to do then they can easily become bored and eventually develop behavioral problems. Thus, it is important to provide toys and activities for your Indian Ringneck in order for it to develop a happy and affectionate personality. Additionally, Indian Ringnecks are energetic birds that need to get regular exercise to keep them healthy so some out of cage time is important in maintaining a healthy Ringneck.

These are the three most important aspects in properly taking care of an Indian Ringneck. It is by no means a complete guide and as such it is important to thoroughly research everything you need to know about taking care of an Indian Ringneck before you go out and buy one.

Good luck!
